The
Phantom Hound
The
Hound of the Baskervilles is the most famous of the Sherlock
Holmes stories. In this collection of critical essays, Kelvin I
Jones, author of Conan Doyle and the Spirits, The Sherlock Holmes
Murder File and numerous works on the Holmes saga, explains
the inception of Doyle's Gothic crime story. He reveals how The
Hound began life as an East Anglian legend. He also shows how
the dark symbolism of the tale was based largely on Doyle's own
troubled psyche. This wide-sweeping survey of one of the most famous
novels in English crime literature includes an original short story
based on the Legend of Black Shuck, East Anglia's hell hound, which
features Doyle as the master sleuth.

The
Sherlock Holmes Pharmacopoeia
The
long awaited companion volume to THE SHERLOCK HOLMES MURDER FILE
(by the same author), this detailed examination of the poisons of
the Sherlock Holmes stories provides a fascinating insight into
the murky world of Victorian crime. Conan Doyle who was himself
a doctor, possessed a voluminous knowledge of pharmacology. The
author examines several poisons and their uses in the Holmes stories
and also examines the question of the great detective's own drug
addictions. Required reading for crime buffs.

The
Carfax Syndrome
Being A Study of Vampirism In The Sherlock Holmes Stories
Extraordinary
links between Bram Stoker and A.C. Doyle. "What have we to
do with walking corpses?" asked Sherlock Holmes in The Sussex
Vampire. A great deal it seems, if the evidence of The Carfax Syndrome
is to be accepted. First published in 1984, this classic study of
the gothic and vampiric elements of the Holmes stories gives us
pause for thought.
